So you have outfitted your Subaru with an awesome RalliTEK lift and you absolutely love how it looks but something seems a little off. You keep looking at your car and then notice that the stock tires and wheels just don’t compliment the new aggressive, ready for anything stance. You start looking around online at new tires and there are so many choices and so many questions that you just can’t decide what would be right for your Subaru. Here at RalliTEK we are more than happy to help with this tough decision.
One of the questions that we get asked a lot about lifting Subarus is what tire to run. For us at RalliTEK, the answer is fairly simple; a good all-terrain tire is hard to beat but selecting which All-Terrain tire can be confusing. A lot of the big name tire manufacturers are having their All-Terrain tires rated with the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake rating which is a measure of the tire’s performance in the snow. Typically, cars and trucks with this tire rating are not required to chain up during winter conditions on mountain passes; very important for the Subaru community as tire chains are not recommended for use. The majority of the big-name tire manufacturers do have tire sizes that will fit on a Subaru but since they are made to fit trucks and SUVs, the selection is small as most lifted Subarus can clear a 28” tall tire but not much taller.
When we are asked about tire selection for a lifted Subaru, the tires that we recommend the most are: BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2, Falken WildPeak A/T3W, General Grabber AT2, Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac, or the Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015. These tires are all considered All-Terrain tires which mean that they are not an overly aggressive tread pattern; they will be quieter on the road than a Mud-Terrain, handle great in year-round driving and are suitable for most terrain that you will want to tackle with your Subaru.
The BFGoodrich KO2 is amongst the most popular All-Terrain tire due to the great reviews, long tread life, on-road manners and the available traction in on and off-road conditions. We have the Falken WildPeak tires on the RalliTEK 2018 Outback and they have been really good to us. They have driven great on the highway, handle gravel roads and light trails with ease and provide a lot of traction in the snow and ice. The General Grabber AT2 tires are a similar tread pattern to the BFG KO2 and many have given the tire positive reviews stating similar impressions to the BFG KO2. Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs are the most aggressive tread pattern on the list and are a very good all around tire with a little more road noise coming from the more aggressive tread pattern. Goodyear only offers a 29” tall tire so installation on a Subaru offers limited applications. The last tire on the list is the Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015, it is also the least aggressive tread design on the list. This tire has a tread pattern that is more geared towards a user that mostly uses their car on-road and light off-road conditions while the other tires offer a good balance of on and off-road driving.
Installing a good set of All-Terrain tires if you’re thinking of doing any kind of off-road driving is a must; tires like what we have recommended are able to withstand the harsher off-road conditions. Passenger car tires do not have the right construction to handle a weekend of driving forest service roads; the carcass is too thin and they will puncture easily. Installing a set of any of the tires in this article on your Subaru will give you the confidence to get out in the wilderness and make it back without worrying about getting a flat in the middle of nowhere.
